I was thinking about this today and realized that as far as impact in society goes, this guy rates among the top in the U.S. He allowed many of us to, temporarily, escape into a world of our own making and to create beings that we ourselves might like to see ourselves as. This could allow our true personalities to come out and for some, gave us an outlet for some of the frustrations we may feel.

I for one have enjoyed countless games around the table and have made many friends that I might not otherwise have made. His invention also provides a medium for me to stay in contact with dear friends when I am far away.

IMO, the world lost a true artist and inspiration this week despite what some of the religious nutballs say. I hope that his spirit has some fun with those boneheads before moving on.

Thank you for what you gave us Gary.

A strain of bacteria was named in honor of Gary Gygax, namely "Arthronema gygaxiana sp nov UTCC393".[

Fascinating artical.

RIP Gary.

Very thoughtful epitaph, Curt! Well said! One other point about his creation of D&D is that he did it with his friend Dave Arneson. That says a great deal about what a couple pals can come up with when they put their minds to it.

I wonder why they named a virus after him.

Since this is D&D-related, but not worthy of interrupting the other two active threads that we are playing on, I'll post this here...

From one of these threads:

Posted: Sat Apr 12, 2008 9:15 am Post subject:

Okay,
XP for Party for Surviving Dragons, etc.
I rounded everyone up to nearest thousand,
since you where all within 350 xp of it.

Drum roll please,

21, 000 XP

Bill & Bob for Keta & Ed:

8,500 XP for being targets

Rest of party gets the bonus
on this mission, except for Kitten
and Drogo.

4,000 XP

Drogo gets 2,000 XP and
Kitten gets 1,200 XP.

Ed & Keta, Lady Alustriel wants to know
what you desire as your reward for suffering
thru this danger. Keta's previous response
will do, if you want Bob or you can change it.

So, I guess we are current.
