Lyrics

New postby Jeff » Mon Feb 25, 2008 4:43 pm

You know we've played a lot of Name That Tune, but
we've haven't really posted what we think about the
Lyrics we listen to.
No discussion about how the music/lyrics makes us
feel or how we relate to it or what memories it brings
to us and I think that is a shame.

So, Please feel free to express your opinions about
the songs/lyrics that have had an effect on your life,
remind you of a pleasant time, or just evoke a response.

For my first selection, I've decided to choose an
old Rock Ballad fro REO Speedwagon.
I love the guitar solo and the way the music made
everyone I know get up to rock out, pretending to
be part of the band. We all know the lyrics, so sing
along in your head:

Keep on Loving you

You should've seen by the look in my eyes, baby
There was somethin missin
You should've known by the tone of my voice, maybe
But you didn't listen
You played dead
But you never bled
Instead you lay still in the grass
All coiled up and hissin

And though I know all about those men
Still I don't remember
Cause it was us baby, way before then
And we're still together
And I meant, every word I said
When I said that I love you I meant
That I love you forever

And I'm gonna keep on lovin you
Cause it's the only thing I wanna do
I don't wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin you

(solo)

And I meant every word I said
When I said that I love you I meant
That I love you forever

(chorus)

These are the Lyrics Straight from REO's website.
I've read these lyrics again and only one thing comes
to mind:

PUSSYWHIPED

You could not be more Pussywhipped unless
you were Micheal Bolton!

I remember when we all thought this song was so cool!

Damn, hang my head in shame.

Speak for yourself. I never called that one anything resembling "cool". Sadly, I remember the video...even worse.

Speaking of pussywhipped...and Michael Bolton, one song trumps "Keep On Loving You". But yours certainly redeems runner-up in my book.

Percy Sledge wrote:When a man loves a woman
Can't keep his mind on nothing else
He'll trade the world
For the good thing he's found
If she's bad he can't see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend
If he put her down

When a man loves a woman
Spend his very last dime
Tryin' to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comfort
Sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way it ought to be

Well, this man loves a woman
I gave you everything I had
Tryin' to hold on to your precious love
Baby, please don't treat me bad

When a man loves a woman
Down deep in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she plays him for a fool
He's the last one to know
Lovin' eyes can't ever see

When a man loves a woman
He can do no wrong
He can never own some other girl
Yes when a man loves a woman
I know exactly how he feels
'Cause baby, baby, baby, you're my world

When a man loves a woman.....

Now THAT, to this humble cynic, is pussywhipped.

Of course, those ramblings eventually lead to the ultimate stalker song:

Every Breath You Take

You know, when I frist heard that
song by Percy, I thought it showed
an insecure man who was possessive
about his desire, not in love with a
woman at all.

Look, this Lyric here:
If she's bad he can't see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend
If he put her down

That speaks to me of insecurity, poor self esteem
and a pathic individual who needs lots of help.

Then, he goes and makes it worse:
Spend his very last dime
Tryin' to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comfort
Sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way it ought to be

Then he shows he knows nothing of love:
He can never own some other girl

OWNS!!!
LOVE DOES NOT OWN!
Love is a living breathing relationship
that encompasses fondness, compassion,
sex, tenderness, giving, receiving, openness,
trust, and so much more!

Love is not possession.

Sad, pathetic fool.

Thus spake Dr. Jeff.

Here, let me post some of my favorite lyrics. (It's the "la, la, la's" that really do it for me.)

Met a girl, thought she was grand
fell in love, found out first hand
went well for a week or two
then it all came unglued

in a trapped trip I can't grip
never thought I'd be the one who'd slip
then I started to realize
I was living one big lie

She fucking hates me
trust
she fucking hates me
la la la love
I tried too hard
and she tore my feelings like I had none
and ripped them away

She was queen for about an hour
after that shit got sour
she took all I ever had
no sign of guilt
no feeling of bad, no

In a trapped trip I can't grip
never thought i'd be the one who'd slip
then I started to realize
I was living one big lie

[Chorus]

that's my story, as you see
learned my lesson and so did she
now it's over and i'm glad
'cause i'm a fool for all i've said

[Chorus]

la la la la la la la la la love
Trust
la la la la la la la la la love
Trust
and she tore my feelings like I had none
she fucking hates me

I think this is the usual end result of what begins with the songs you've been discussing, above.

This is a song that I originally despised.
But, now I think of as a theme for any
rogue I would role play.

With a little bit of Luck

The Lord above gave man an arm of iron
So he could do his job and never shirk
The Lord above gave man an arm of iron - but
With a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck
Someone else'll do the blinkin' work
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck you'll never work

The Lord above made liquor for temptation
To see if man could turn away from sin
The Lord above made liquor for temptation - but
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck
When temptation comes you'll give right in

Oh, you can walk the straight and narrow
But with a little bit of luck you'll run amok

The gentle sex was made for man to marry
To share his nest and see his food is cooked
The gentle sex was made for man to marry-but
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck
You can have it all and not get hooked

With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of bloomin' luck
you won't get hooked

The Lord above made man to help is neighbor
No matter where, on land, or sea, or foam
The Lord above made man to help his neighbor - but
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck
When he comes around you won't be home
With a little bit of luck ... you won't be home

They're always throwin' goodness at you
But with a little bit of luck a man can duck

Oh, it's a crime for man to go philanderin'
And fill his wife's poor heart with grief and doubt
Oh, it's a crime for man to go philanderin', but
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck
You can see the bloodhound don't find out
With a little bit of luck... she won't find out
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of bloomin' luck

He doesn't have a tuppence in his pocket
The poorest bloke you'll ever hope to meet
He doesn't have a tuppence in his pocket-but
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of luck
He'll be movin' up to easy street
With a little bit of luck... he's movin' up
With a little bit, with a little bit
With a little bit of bloomin' luck

Thoughts?
Ideas?
What do you think?

Too much talk about two things I don't believe in (any sort or lord or luck). But, I'm all for the drinkin' and philanderin'.

It's a song sung by the character Alfred P Dolittle in
My Fair Lady.

And, as a character, he represents a man who strives
vainly to live up to his name.

Force Ten By Rush

Tough times demand tough talk
Demand tough hearts demand tough songs
Demand --

We can rise and fall like empires
Flow in and out like the tide
Be vain and smart, humble and dumb
We can hit and miss like pride

We can circle around like hurricanes
Dance and dream like lovers
Attack the day like birds of prey
Or scavengers under cover

Look in --
To the eye of the storm
Look out --
For the force without form
Look around --
At the sight and the sound
Look in look out look around --

We can move with savage grace
To the rhythms of the night
Cool and remote like dancing girls
In the heat of the beat and the lights

We can wear the rose of romance
An air of joie de vivre
Too-tender hearts upon our sleeves
Or skin as thick as thieves'

Rising falling at force ten
We twist the world and ride the wind

Look in --
Look the storm in the eye
Look out --
To the sea and the sky
Look around --
At the sight and the sound
Look in look out look around --

Very Powerful Lyrics.
I find this song very much
like a Zen response to a
complicated situation.

Look for that which we are not
immeadiately able to sense, try
to know that which we are missing
so we don't have to be blown away.

Heard this the other day and thought, "Hey, I forgot
how good a song this is."

Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation in the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Thank you Pink Floyd
